Didi and me

It’s a few months since I wrote about our delightful rescue Labrador Didi and she has settled in really well. In fact almost too well. She now rules the roost.

We have a dignified 13-year-old Lab called Emma who I’m sure rues the day we brought in a bundle of energy that constantly disturbs her. Last night when I got home I couldn’t understand why Emma wasn’t coming to greet me – she looked quite cheery but wasn’t moving from under the palm trees.

On closer inspection the watering system had entangled in her collar so she couldn’t walk more than a few feet. That could have happened only after a real rough-house between the two.

Didi now goes off every morning with the dog walker – she’s collected just after 7 am and heads off for 90 minutes of play with other Lab puppies including one called Chewy – only a kid could have named him!

We’ve done this to enable Emma to get her daily walk (which she still loves) in peace and quiet. She gets to amble and sniff and enjoy time with husband without being pushed, bitten, pulled and nipped at. And Didi gets to really exercise and come home having spent all her energy. Or rather most of her energy. She still finds time to rip up the floorboards from our wooden gazebo – but they were starting to rot so we feel she has just hurried the renovation process.

Now holes are appearing in the garden – but we had a great tip from our trainer: pop a bit of doggy do into the hole before you fill it in. They don’t dig there again – but of course they just dig right next to the spot! But that’s all part and parcel of having a pooch – and the love and affection is worth every problem.

And I still think she’s the most beautiful Lab we’ve ever owned – she has yellow eyelashes that look like a little nailbrush. Love them!

From the 7th floor: We bought exclusive pictures of gorgeous Eric Dane, aka McSteamy of Grey’s Anatomy, and his real-life baby last week. Took a bit of bidding but we got them and went for an inside spread. But when I saw the layout I just knew he had to be on the cover. Even if you don’t watch Grey’s that body and that pose with that tiny little baby are going to get everyone oohing and aahing at the newsstand! Tell us what you think!

I loved that photo of Didi, I have one of my own and looks just like him. I named her Lady Grace, Gracie for short, I found her wondering around on the N2 near Salt Rock in KZN. She had a plastic roap around her neck that had embedded its self into her flesh and she was so thin her bones were sticking throught what little fur was left one her. It was raining and I got out of my car all dress for work but I did not care about myself, I just wanted to help this poor animal, she came to me and I gave her my cheese sandwich and she snapped it up in a flash, lucky she hid under my car and with the help od the trusty man Dennis from the SPCA, he got her into the van.
I could not stop thinking about this dog and her pleading eyes, so I called the SPCA and in a week I adopted her. She was only about 15mts old and just 9kgs, she is now a healty 23kgs
She is the most amazing dog, and so very cleaver and quick to learn.
I can't beleive that there are such terrible people out there that abuse these wonderful caring animals.
Thanks for sharing your stories with us.
