Thursday morning news conference is a regular around here. We bring ideas of possible stories, gossip a bit inbetween and basically have a good old time (yes, at a weekly magazine – no wait, 3 weekly magazines this is considered “down time” -
Sad, I know). Anyway, I’m sitting minding my own business waiting for my turn to dazzle my audience of editors and writers with my wonderful story ideas (one of which is about a woman who was in labour for 20 days – it’s a slow news day ok!) when my delightful and beautiful boss (excuse me, it’s nearly time for our annual increases so bear with me) breaks the news that I have to start blogging.
So here I am. Let me tell you what I do. I am the Celebrity and Teens Editor. Normally when I tell people what I do the general response is “Is that even a job?” It certainly is a bit of a weird title, it’s not like you can go and study to be a celebrity and teens editor (what would you study – how to gossip professionally and never grow up?!) but anyhoot, that’s how I roll and I must admit I do love it. So what does a Celebrity editor do?
Well, in my case I mostly work with international celebrity stories (sounds even more fah-bulous doesn’t it?) but that just means that I get about 400+ emails a day with paparazzi pictures which I sift through sorting the boring (3/4 of the emails involve celebs walking in the street doing nothing) from the fabulous (think of the first pics of the Brangelina twins or a groovy little exclusive that you know the competitors would have loved to get their hands on).
I also read just about every bit of celebrity gossip known to man (internet, magazines, newspapers) and my job is to know what’s happening in who’s life. Then between Mondays and Wednesdays my lovely colleague Jane and I will fight out who we should cover, how big it should be covered and basically try and be clever and make you stop and say “wow, did you see this!?!”).
If you’re sitting at home saying that, please know that you are making me very happy! So that’s one half of my job. The other half is being teen editor. Now, it’s been a little while since I’ve been a teen myself but this certainly gives me a wonderful opportunity to think like a teenager and well geting on “the list” at parties and concerts certainly is a plus.
Oooo I sure do like that list!
BUT the best part of my job is that once a week in the teen section I can do an advice article (when I say “I can do” I mean I brief an award winning journalist (the super funky Kim) what to write about and imagine that someone somewhere will be reading this and our advice on life will stick with them forever, changing the path of their lives and giving them a deeper meaning in…. o wait, excuse me, have to go.... Lindsay Lohan’s drunk again!
Till next time!
xoxo
(get it – Gossip Girl?) – that’s funny if you’re a teenager ok.
