From the 7th floor:
Here are some things you might not know about YOU magazine!
1. YOU is always written in capital letters.
2. Three staffers have worked here since day 1 in 1987.
3. YOU’s first cover was Princess Diana with a very young Prince Harry on her hip.
4. It takes seven hours to print YOU and another four to five days to distribute the mag countrywide. Capetonians get to grab their copy on a Friday already! Lucky us in so many ways.
5. YOU is sold in several Southern African countries including Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana.
6. We have news conferences every Monday and Thursday mornings. Mondays are for urgent stories we need done for Wednesday’s deadline. Thursday conferences last more than two hours and are for general stories and news stories. We have our Johannesburg office hooked up on a TV system so we can see each other when we discuss our ideas.
Wednesday night is our main deadline night – staff often work till 11pm or later signing off the final pages.
6. Products, books and dvds sent to us for review are put on a Christmas sale in December and all money goes to charity – last year we made R24 000!
7. We don’t get to keep the clothes we shoot for fashion
8. We have won a number of awards over the years including Picas, Media24 Excellence Awards, Advantage Admag Awards and Sunday Times Next Generation Brand Awards
9. Many of our staffers are good personal friends after hours and we share bottles of wine and hours of gossip
10. We still get excited when we see someone reading YOU magazine
- Linda Pietersen is YOU's senior deputy editor.
