Are you suffering Twilight withdrawal symptoms? Are there days when you secretly wonder whether Jacob Black, Edward Cullen and the gang were just ghostly figures in your dreams? Well, don’t give up; there’s hope.
Stephenie Meyer, author of the super-popular vampire series, recently announced a new book is about to hit the shelves. Her original plan was to publish it on her website as a short story but the project took off and will now appear as a full-length book.
And there’s more good news for Twilight junkies: the third film in the series, Eclipse, will open in South Africa on 2 July. This will no doubt add to the global earnings of $1 billion (about R7,5 billion) or so Meyer has made from the first two movies, Twilight and New Moon, not to mention what she has earned from the 90 million copies of the Twilight books sold so far.
Her readers should meanwhile make a note in their diaries: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner will hit the shelves on 5 June. The publishers plan a print run of 1,5 million - and that’s only the first edition.
Who exactly is Bree Tanner? Twilight junkies have already met her: she makes a brief appearance in Eclipse.
Victoria, the redhead vampire who wants revenge on Bella and the Cullens after the murder of her beloved, James, turns Bree into a vampire. The young vamp joins the Cullens and tries to follow their vegetarian lifestyle. Bree then dies during Victoria’s war against the Cullens and the Quileute werewolf tribe.
“I’d always considered The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner as something for the fans,” Meyer says. “They’ve been so supportive of all things Twilight.”
“You all have bought a ton of my books and I wanted to give you this story as a gift,” Meyer wrote on her blog.
“I’m as surprised as anyone about this novella. When I began working on it in 2005 it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse. I thought it might end up as a short story I could include on my website - but it grew longer than I anticipated.”
