Rolling with the big guys

It's difficult to believe Volkswagen’s Amarok is a first foray into the one-ton bakkie segment for the German manufacturer – it gives the impression that VW has been a role-player in the big-bakkie business for years.

The double-cab model has made a name for itself in its market segment and the new Amarok single-cab doesn’t have to stand back to any competitor.

Particularly impressive is the single-cab’s massive loadbed. At 1 620 mm it’s the widest in the business and the usable width of 1 222 mm between the wheel arches is more than 100 mm more than its closest competitor.

It’s also the only vehicle in its class that can accommodate two Euro palettes crosswise. Driving this tough vehicle is such a pleasure it feels as if you’re behind the wheel of a SUV rather than your typical bakkie.
