Space and more space

It might not be the prettiest Toyota on the road but just because the new Innova isn’t eye candy doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Quite the contrary!

This Toyota newcomer with the odd name is an affordable people carrier with space for eight. Like its little brother, the
Avanza, what you see is what you get – the Innova is a spacious vehicle at an affordable price that’s (hopefully) built to last.

There are two versions – a less-expensive eight-seater model and a more luxurious model with room for seven
passengers.

In the middle row the seven-seater has individual “captain’s” chairs that can tilt and move forwards and backwards independently, while the eight-seater model has a bench seat.

The centre seats can be folded flat and tilted forwards while the third-row seats, like those of the Fortuner, can be folded to the sides.

Both versions of the Innova come with all the usual features such as an onboard computer, sound controls on the steering wheel and air conditioning. The seven-seater also has a rearview mirror camera. Two airbags and safety belts for all occupants are standard on both vehicles, and they’re fitted with anti-lock braking systems (ABS).

Under the bonnet is a 2,7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 118 kW and 241 Nm.

Both the seven-seater and eight-seater versions offer excellent value. Toyota won’t be winning any design awards for the Innova but this is one “book” that should definitely not be judged by its dull cover.

THE INNOVA RANGE
Seven-seater:
R249 700
Eight-seater: R265 500
VERDICT: Not just value for money but also family-friendly
