It’s a beautiful summer’s day in Cape Town when we visit the Proteas batsman JP DUMINY at home in upmarket Plattekloof, a 20-minute drive from the city centre. Light streams in through the big windows of the double-storey house and we linger a while to take in the breathtaking view of Table Mountain. He’s only 25 and already owns his dream home.
JP made headlines a year ago when the Mumbai Indians paid him R18,9 million to play for them in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League.
Two large photographs next to the stairs are of him and girlfriend SUE ERASMUS (25), a part-time model. They have been together for more than a year and moved into the house last August.
They met at a fashion show where Sue was one of the people modelling the new Proteas kit. She immediately caught his eye and despite being an introvert JP went across to speak to her.
When he tours with the Proteas she usually accompanies him. She loves travelling and will fly to India the day before Valentine’s Day to join him.
“He’s very easygoing and will do anything with me. If I say let’s jump off a mountain he’ll do it. He is always up for a challenge. He’s such a sweet, sexy man.”
And what about Sue makes JP’s heart beat a little faster? “She’s very relaxed and easygoing as well. I like relaxed people, especially with my fast lifestyle. Oh, and she’s great in the kitchen. I can’t complain there.”
Sue and her mother decorated the house but left the entertainment room to JP. It’s his favourite room and boasts a poker table, snooker table and bar. Framed photographs of Tiger Woods adorn the walls. “I still admire him - but obviously not for his latest antics.”
JP will soon play against India for the first time on their home turf and admits he’s appre¬hensive, especially as the team will be without Mickey Arthur as coach.
“It will be a challenge to test my skills against their bowling attack. It won’t be easy to do so with a new coach. I don’t know what to expect.”
