It should be one of the most joyous times of her life. Her beloved daughter, her “nunu”, will soon give her what she longs for most: a grandbaby, as she puts it, and she was having a wonderful time planning for the new arrival.
Then the unthinkable happened and in a few moments of chaos and carnage her child’s life fell apart. Ntombi Khumalo, mother of sexy Afropop singer and Rhythm City actress Kelly Khumalo, speaks for the first time in the wake of the
Soweto street-racing tragedy that left four schoolboys dead and two others fighting for their lives (YOU, 18 March).
One of the two men accused of causing the tragedy is Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, the man long rumoured to be Kelly’s lover and the father of her unborn child.
Ntombi confirms this is true. Molemo and Kelly were “building a good life together”, she tells us. “My child loves him so much. Kelly isn’t taking any of this very well and can’t stop crying. I was crying too yesterday when I was with her.”
They will get through it, she says determinedly. “I told Kelly every woman has to go through something terrible to grow and this is her thing. I went through hardships as a single mother to raise her and her younger sister, Zandi.”
The 25-year-old beauty went to ground after the 8 March crash on Mdlalose Drive in Protea Glen that turned Jub Jub and his co-accused, Themba Tshabalala, into two of the most vilified people in the country.
