It sounded too good to be true: an anonymous man hands over the keys of a R2-million Audi to a group of car guards. He had a dream, he said, in which he was told to give his sports car to someone who’d use it to do good deeds for others. The benefactor, it turns out, has a history of philanthropy . . . but there’s another side to him too, as we discovered when we did a bit of digging. As usual we tried to do what we aspire to do so well: bring you the story behind the story you see on the news or in the papers. Read about the good Samaritan, the car guards and the Audi - and let us know what you think.
There are a number of juicy stories-behind-the-stories this week. Journalist Sulaiman Philip became the proverbial fly on the wall when he went to interview controversial socialite Khanyi Mbau’s latest boyfriend, businessman Theunis Crous, and a dramatic row erupted. Sulaiman and photographer Tumelo Leburu captured it all - check out the Mobi article and more pictures in the print issue. We also revisit the Zola saga and this time his cousin breaks the family silence to shed some light on how fame twisted the fallen idol.
Then there’s Haiti. You might have been bombarded by images and news of the quake-devastated country but our article in the print issue is a quintessential wrap on the disaster. A word of warning: some of the pictures are disturbing. This was a case of nature at its most ferocious and the reality is harrowing.
Till next week,
