He took a team that hadn’t won a title in 26 years to the pinnacle of success.

True to his Scottish roots Sir Alex Ferguson was wearing a kilt and ceremonial dinner jacket when he stepped out of a limo to attend a bash to mark his 25 years as Manchester United’s boss.

The 69-year-old had invited a string of players past and present and many a football bigwig to the celebration and they turned out in full force to honour a man regarded as the most successful soccer manager of all time.

Some 330 million people around the world are members of the Red Devils’ fan club and Fergie is largely responsible for that.

Under his shrewd leadership Man U has become one of the glamour clubs of the world and a breeding ground of talent, producing some of the most skilful, exciting players the game has seen.

YOU’s Murphy Malone looks at Fergie’s achievements, some of the best-loved stories about him and memorable quotes from the eccentric Scot. Read more in YOU 24 November 2011.
