Her “friends” live in a world called Calalini where the mercury sometimes soars to 200 deg C. Jani Schofield holds up a sketch of a cat. His name is 400, she says. He’s very bossy.

It’s this cat, Jani says, together with a rat called Wednesday and a girl named 24 Hours, that tell her to hurt her mother, father and little brother.

She’s only seven but her days are far from filled with carefree fun. Too often schizophrenia holds her captive in a dark world where hallucinations distort reality unrecognisably.

When she was five Jani tried to commit suicide. She tried to jump from her bedroom window on the second storey of their block of flats in Santa Clarita, California, her father Michael says. On another occasion she tried to strangle herself.

The girl has since achieved overnight fame after appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show when she described Calalini as the place where all her “friends” live.

By January last year her psychotic episodes were so bad she had to be admitted to a psychiatric unit.

Unlike other newborns she slept just four hours a day instead of 14 to 16 hours. She cried all the time and the only thing that would shut her up, her parents say, was being surrounded by lots of people.

There was nothing physically wrong with her. Then, just before her third birthday, the imaginary friends arrived.

When disturbed by a psychotic episode she would scratch and bite her parents until they bled and even tried to scratch Michael’s eyes out. Seconds later she’d be her old, loving self.

And although Jani complained of being lonely, things just deteriorated after the birth of her brother, Bodhi. And she wanted to harm herself more.

“I remember her strangling herself,” her mother Susan says. “[She was] holding her hands around her neck, and she’s like, ‘How can I break my own neck?’ ”

Eventually she had to be hospitalised and was diagnosed with schizophrenia when she was six.

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Doctors are trying their best to control her psychotic episodes with medication and her hallucinations aren’t as bad as they were.

But her parents don’t know how much longer they can protect their child from herself. “I’m not hanging on to the hope that she’ll get better,” Michael says sadly. “My biggest fear is she won’t live to 18.”

God did not create the bad things, Satan did. God just let's it happen and there are good reasons for.
Why do we always go and look for satan in everything e.g. possesion. Look for satan and you shall find him. She is just sick. I do agree that we ALL should pray for her healing. As for her parents - they are doing the best they can they have not given up yet. Does any one no what they are going through. No cause you are not there. Stop judging it is wrong.

GOD DOES NOT EXIST. IF HE DID, WHY WOULD PEOPLE GET ILL LIKE THIS? WHY WOULD BAD THINGS HAPPEN IN THIS WORLD?? STOP WITH THE RELIGIOUS COMMENTS.
This girl is ill, and she needs help. I have depression and I find that hard enough to deal with and i'm 17. She is only 7. I feel so bad for her. I hope she gets better and I hope her parents stick by her side!

    Hi there,
Please pray to the DIVINE for HELP. The help will come to you as you do not have the power to weaken these spirits that has taken over your daughters life. The help you get will clean the aura around the family & you (parents) . You then pray ( I do believe that you believe in a SAINT) from your HOLY book...Page12. I am a messanger & see all in the SPIRITUAL world!!!!
I have seen you child's previous life...she was a nun...pure soul. These spirits are evil & have not crossed over.
    Take care.
    Regards.

The girls is possessed. Duh. It's obvious, but we are all too clever and think we are above a spiritual reality.

And guess what - they'll drug the girl to death - she won't get better. The pride and arrogance in the culture now won't allow the obvious answer to be followed all so we can remain convinced that we are right in out dead view of this world. So amazingly sad that psychotic atheism rules - and these poor parents will watch their daughter be torn apart.

By the way, if you have first hand experience with what can be termed the "supernatural" you would know it exists - seeing it first hand changes your life. No kidding!

maybe there isn't anything wrong with her......
perhaps if she stayed in another home......she might be fine!
seems like her parents have told her so often that she is schizo.....
she is believing and living it.

Wish the You would not allow people to make religious comments.

Secondly, my heart goes out the parents, and it's a good thing they are in the US where people aren't so close minded and by going on the Oprah show she will get all the help she and her family needs.

I DO BELIEVE THAT THIS LITTLE GIRL IS POSSESSED.IT IS UP TO HERPARENTS NOW TO CALL UPON OUR HEALER THE NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES JESUS CHRIST AND ASK HIM TO HELP , HE LOVES CHILDREN HE WILL HEAL THEIR DAUGHTER THEY MUST JUST ASK HIM AND BELIEVE HIM TO DO SO. NO DOCTOR IN THE WORLD WILL BE ABLE TO HELP THEIR CHILD , ALL THAT THEY WILL DO IS SEDATE THE POOR GIRL AND THAT IS WHAT SATAN WANTS TO DESTROY THIS GIRL AND HER FAMILY.

Some of these comments about possesion is disturbing. This child has a legitimate medical disorder. Here in the US this medical issue is being brought into the spotlight more by stories as sad as this.

We as a nation are more informed now than we were 10 years ago. Lots of children have been helped by doctor intervention and medication, my prayers are with Jani and her family.

This poor little girl is suffering and I do not think it is a mental disorder. What does a five year old know about committing suicide?
    It sounds like possession!

What an incredible story. My heart goes out to her, and her parents - and she is lucky to have such incredible human beings loving her and taking care of her. Her parents are indeed an inspiration to us all. All this child needs is love and it seems as if she is getting it. Best of luck!

Who is to say this little girl is really Schizophrenic and does not have the power/gift to see beyong the veil of this world? And that these imanginary friends are really imaginary? There seems to be so much detail to the world of her "imaginary" friends ie: the temperature. And the unusual names they have. We always immediately dispute anything we don't understand or believe in.
