It’s a topic that has everyone hot under the collar – the shocking rise and rise of the cost of electricity. How are we supposed to budget and keep costs under control when the price of power goes up in such huge chunks? What about winter?

We aren’t even using our heaters at the moment.

What has always amazed me about South Africans is how little we make use of solar power. After all we probably have more hours of sunshine than many other parts of the world.

Lots of people in the UK use solar panels for heating and other purposes – and they have such dismal weather in the northern hemisphere.

So we decided to find out all you need to know about solar geysers. We know geysers chew up most of the electricity used in any household so surely that’s the best place to start if you want to reduce that monthly bill. Yes, solar geysers are expensive but Eskom has increased the rebate they give you for making the switch. Of course they’ve been able to increase it because we’re paying so much more for electricity, so if you want to be argumentative you could say we’re really just getting our own hard-earned cash back.

But it’s better than getting nothing back, I say. Turn to page 16 to find our easy guide on how to get going and start saving – and of course you could add being a bit greener as an incentive too. We all have to start somewhere
– so start with this step!
