On Easter Sunday South Africa woke up to the shocking news that Eugene Terre’Blanche had been hacked and beaten to death as he lay sleeping on his farm near Ventersdorp.
No matter what we may have thought of him in life his grisly death can’t be condoned. Even though the killing was allegedly the result of a wage dispute between Terre’Blanche and two of his farmworkers, in a country like South Africa it’s being seen as far more than that.
Julius Malema and his advocacy of the struggle song Kill the Boer were, in the heated aftermath of the murder, directly blamed for ET’s death by AWB stalwarts. But common sense and calm have since prevailed and we can now only watch and wait to see what will happen in the weeks ahead.
Hopefully restraint and dignity will win the day. See page 8.
