On Easter Sunday South Africa woke up to the shocking news that Eugene Terre’Blanche had been hacked and beaten to death as he lay sleeping on his farm near Ventersdorp.

No matter what we may have thought of him in life his grisly death can’t be condoned. Even though the killing was allegedly the result of a wage dispute between Terre’Blanche and two of his farmworkers, in a country like South Africa it’s being seen as far more than that.

Julius Malema and his advocacy of the struggle song Kill the Boer were, in the heated aftermath of the murder, directly blamed for ET’s death by AWB stalwarts. But common sense and calm have since prevailed and we can now only watch and wait to see what will happen in the weeks ahead.

Hopefully restraint and dignity will win the day. See page 8.

The New children's act effectively means nothing. in my experience, the act is overuled by "best interests of the children", rendering the act ineffective. I was excited and hopeful when the first part was signed in, but since then, at every turn, I have lost faith and hope. "Best intersts of the children" is VERY subjective. unfortunately, there is no caselaw to back changes up, so we will continue this way, until...who knows!!
The court system, is biased towards "women and children"...the catch-phrase of our time. (I have had to use it in a charity program to get funds - very powerful!).
What will it take for society to see that fathers have uses, besides work and money. Once society has changed it's view, how long before the courts excercise the will of the society.
In the meantime, 15000 children are victims of divorce and the legal system.

Hi, It was with sadness that I read YOU's article in 15 April edition on the new Children's Act. It came to late for me. I have effectively lost my kids because of the Mother's vindictiveness and involving the children in what should have been between her and myself. The bitterness has caused the relationship to be irretrieveable (I think) as they are now 25 yo and 33 yo. One gets to the point of "just let it be" which does not help. Anymore fighting just embitters more. The only thing that worries me is the application of the Act as the same court officials are still there. As I experienced at Wynberg maintenance court, these officials, to my mind, seemed to be on her side without ever interviewing me for my side of the story. Shameful. May the Act truely help others as the pain is something else.
