Wow, what a treat! About 15 000 people were enthusiastically entertained by SA’s top singing artists on one stage in Cape Town – and they weren’t all Capetonians; I know of people who flew in from Johannesburg and Namibia.
The occasion was YOU and sister magazine Huisgenoot’s Skouspel Plus held last weekend at GrandWest’s Grand Arena (see page 216). There were far too many highlights to mention here but Mango Groove’s Claire Johnston – back with a bang with a new album after many years – was truly fantastic (she’s in the picture with me and Sasha-Lee Davids). The other artists kept saying how nice she is and what an honour it was to share the stage with this music icon.
We were back at the Arena on Sunday night with a new concert when the 10 finalists in our Teen Talent competition appeared with big names such as Kurt Darren and Emo Adams. What an experience! The audience was fantastic – yelling and clapping and jumping around after every number – and the youngsters amazed everyone. YOU’s new musical baby will grow into something BIG. Make sure you’re there next year (more about it next week).
Skouspel Plus added a new aspect this year: our fashion team scouted around GrandWest to check out and photograph some concertgoers’ outfits. Next week we’ll show you what they wore and the following week we’ll post more readers’ fashions on our website. But, oops, in the rush they didn’t record the featured readers’ names. Next week our beauty pages will also reveal some of the top performers’ make-up secrets.
And for those who always want to know, Cape Town-based Charlene Sauerman designed my dress once again. Thanks, Charlene.
