The ash cloud caused by the eruption of the unpronounceable Icelandic volcano was one of the few news events that dominate global media recently.

One day there were a few cancelled flights in Britain, the next day it was a full-blown crisis for the international airline industry. Within days the ash cloud caused by the eruption had crippled most of Europe’s airlines and even we weren’t left untouched.

Industries lost hundreds of millions of rands – in just a few days one South African flower exporter had to destroy five tons of proteas destined for Europe.

The after-effects are still being felt as economies around the world try to recover from financial losses that run into
many billions. Turn to page 16 to find out how a tiny volcano caused so much chaos.

For those who haven’t secured tickets to the Fifa World Cup we have the perfect prize on page 54.

We’re giving away a fully kitted-out soccer room so you can watch all the excitement of the tournament in the comfort of your home – furniture, accessories, a television and even a DStv decoder to make it a complete home-entertainment experience. And of course your room will outlast any ticket you might have bought!

Don’t miss next week’s issue because you could still be lucky in the ticket stakes. In conjunction with McDonald’s we’re giving away 60 tickets to World Cup games. So make sure you grab your last chance with YOU.
