It was late on Friday afternoon when reams of pages from the new Kitty Kelley book on Oprah landed in my inbox.

We’d been given first option to buy an extract and we had mere hours to scan the 500-odd pages and choose a section we thought readers would enjoy. Assistant editor Nicola Whitfield and I started reading immediately.

We’d read gossipy  snippets from the book in newspapers but we soon realised there was much more to this biography than that. And there were the pictures of a young Oprah we’d never seen before – quite amazing. Both of us earmarked
exactly the same section we believed provides insight into the childhood and mind of this powerful woman we all love watching on TV. Turn to page 10 for our exclusive extract.

Entertainment editor Jared Orlin is a huge soapie fan as I’m sure YOU readers have realised. He has such a good relationship with so many actors and producers that he just picks up the phone and has great heart-to-hearts, coaxing them into telling him all about their loves and lives off the soap sets. This week, on page 134, you can read about the real drama in the life of Drake Hogestyn, who plays John Black in Days of Our Lives.

Football fever is alive and well on our floor so when we heard we’d nailed a giveaway of 60 tickets to World Cup games
everyone got excited. Just a pity competition rules dictate none of us may enter.

But for all of you out there dying to get your hands on a ticket or two, good luck – and here’s to great games ahead
of us.
