I read the award-winning bestseller We Need to Talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver in 2008. It’s narrated by a woman whose son has committed a horrific act and I still get shivers whenever I think about it.
I don’t know anyone who read it and felt indifferent. Was it the mother or the child who was actually the problem?
Now the movie is out, starring the talented Tilda Swinton, but I’m not sure I can put myself through that trauma again – although I hear it’s absolutely brilliant.
Read our story (page 16) about the author of this disturbing read. You have to have some idiosyncrasies, I believe, to be able to write such an incredible tale.
Our big read of the week is also about children who kill – we get the inside story from three parents whose sons became murderers. How do you cope? How do you live with the guilt and the shame, not to mention the hatred from your community?
One parent even changed her identity and moved many times to try to put the horror behind her and escape the stigma attached to the family because of her son’s evil deed. Riveting reading. See page 110.
On a lighter note, a must-watch on TV is the comedy series Modern Family – a show that’s rapidly becoming as popular as Friends was all those years ago.
I’ve already seen quite a few episodes but season one is starting on e.tv this week and I love it so much I’m going to watch it from the beginning. It’s real laugh-out-loud viewing.
We have a rundown of who’s who in the Modern Family zoo on page 124. Don’t miss it!
Till next week,
LInda
