Circumcision: my son (5) mutilated

It should have been a simple procedure – only minutes in the operating theatre, a little antiseptic and it would all be over.

Then the woman in the waiting room heard her son’s hysterical cries and her blood ran cold.

That day something went terribly wrong in the state hospital in Vryheid and four months later Hester and Spekkies van Vuuren are still reeling from shock and dismay. What was to have been a circumcision ended up with Marco, their five-year old son, losing part of his penis.

Only a stub remains of what previously was a normal penis. And after months of painful procedures and doctors’ examinations the toughest part still lies ahead: telling the little boy he’s permanently scarred and unlikely to be like other boys and young men.

The Cuban doctor who did the circumcision was supposed to make just a small incision, Hester says at her parents’ home in Coronation, Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, where the family live. Instead he used nitrogen which burnt the boy’s penis so badly its head was destroyed and five weeks later fell off.

“Some nights I couldn’t sleep,” a heartbroken Hester says. “When I closed my eyes I could hear Marco screaming as he came out of the theatre. And I will never be able to forget that raw wound.”

The 29-year-old mom is bracing herself for the reaction of Marco’s schoolmates when he starts Grade 1 next year. Then she’ll have to explain why he is different.

She speaks openly about her son’s mutilation. But Spekkies (32), a driver at the anthracite mine in Coronation, is less forthcoming.

“It’s a sensitive issue for a man,” is all Spekkies says before he looks away and quickly leaves the room.

The boy, named after Hester’s favourite character in 7de Laan, sits quietly at her side. Occasionally their hands touch. She wants Marco to know she’s doing everything in her power to help him.

Even though it means scrimping and saving she’ll do whatever is needed to raise R50 000 to R60 000 for a reconstructive operation to repair her son’s urethra, which now protrudes between his testicles and penis.

More surgery might be necessary and Marco also needs psychological help but the damage to his sex organ can’t be undone.

It's scary at the amount of butchers in the medical field. I call them that bcos I have been to them, not once, not twice. I cannot tell you how bad the vibes were in some of these doctor's rooms. I now refuse to let a rude, unmannered doctor have the privilege of taking my money. A successful doctor will always have a smile on his face, because he makes enough money to rightfully buy that big Mercedes benz and mansion. I realised that when I saw dr George Scharf in Pta concerning a cyst in my liver and a gallbladder ready to burst. 2 Doctors told me to go home and get over myself and to stop imagining that I was sick. I k
knew it was not a matter of seeking attention and out of all the doctors I saw dr Scharf sorted me out in no time and that is because the medical field is his passion and he does it with pride. I also grew up in Vryheid and I hope something happens to this doctor who mutilated this little boy who now has a lot of baggage to carry with him, because some doctor??? didn't want to admit that he didn't have a clue how to do this operation. What's sad is that he will probably sleep like a baby despite the fact that he ruined a little boys life. even sadder is the fact that this is not the first time he messed up it seems. The saddest though is that he will probable be transferred to another hospital and carry on with his butchering. Sorry mate, no sympathy for you. I have met and trusted doctors of your calibre. I'm just lucky that the one who fixed their mess ups knew how to be a doctor. I think it's an ego thing though. I've come to realise insecure doctors think they are a step above the rest of the world. I can't do their job and I'm 100% sure they can't do mine. We are both needed. I'm happy to read that little Marco is doing fine. My prayers are with him and his family.

To the people who think this story should not have been told, let me explain what good has come from bringing this to the public`s attention.

    1) He was operated on this week to help repair the damage by a doctor who read his story and wanted to help.

    2) People have pulled together to get the family donations for his future medical expenses, a computer, internet (to speak with people wishing to help) and now maybe even a Lawyer and a fund set up for him.

    3) Marco`s own facebook group to send prayers and support to Marco and his family from all over the world. (HELP SUPPORT MARCO VAN VUUREN)

I think the point is nobody should be ashamed of shining the spotlight on injustice. The old way of sweeping these things under the rug is a dangerous practise. It allows the person who did this to get away with it, not take responsibilty and continue to do this to other victims.

I think this family was brave to come forward, it could not have been easy for them but alot of good has come out of their honesty.

that is really sad ,...... my heart is with HIM .I am sure HE will get the medical help HE needs .but; let me tell you , I don't appreciate when some one uses the word ''butchers '' i mean,,, the plural category of the word .concerning  more than one ,,,,,,,,grammatically speaking because Cuban doctor are simply the BEST we have IN the health service right now, they are saving life everyday in  rural areas of the country where THE SOUTH AFRICAN DOCTORS ARE TO PROUD TO GO . CUBAN DOCTORS CARE MORE ABOUT THE PATIENTS , THEY WORK HARDER  AND THEY ARE VERY WELL TRAINED one CUBAN surgeon saved my life when a south african almost KILLED ME
MY POINT IS ............IT IS UNFAIR TO USE GENERALIZATIONS.PERIOD

THIS PARTICULAR Dr FOM Vryheid I HOPE HE WILL PAY FOR HIS MISTAKES

I feel terribly for this little boy but how can his mother say she's worried about him starting school because then she'll have to tell his friends why his different when she didnt have to expose him to the media like that. That should of stayed private so the little boy could live without everyone knowing what he has to live with you. Im sorry but I dont believe that was the right thing to do.

I feel so bad for what happen to your little boy. I hope he can get some type of reconstructive surgery to fix his penis. A similar issue happen to my son. During my son's circumcision his penis head got cut off too and he ended getting rushed into surgery to fix it. Luckily they were able to reattach it and he seems like he as no ill effects of what happen to him, but I still can't believe how the stupid doctor screwed up so badly.

I have a 4 year old son and I can only imagine what Marco & his parents must be going through. My prayers are with Marco & his parents. As for that Doctor, he should take full responsibility for this innocents childs medical bills and have his licence taken away and cut into pieces. I know people make mistakes but when it comes to little children you cannot make mistakes especially one like this.

I grew up in Vryheid and I have had personnal dealings with that very same Cubin doctor.. My personnal oppinion is I think he shouldn't even operate on animals let alone adults and children. Vryheid hospital really needs to have a good look at what kind of doctors are working there for them, alot of them don't care and treat you like utmost dirt... I really hope he looses his license to practice medicine and go back to where he came from... My heart goes out to the Van Vuuren family, it is really traumatic. I've got a son and I can't imagine what I would do if he was in your little boys shoes. Your son is very special... The Cuban Doctor should be sued not only for Marco's loss, but for all the pain and suffering as well.. Be strong and God is with you through this difficult time.. God Bless

What is the world coming to. We cant trust Doctors with our most precious possessions (Our children). I remember a old saying "Doctors bury their mistakes". This doctor should not be allowed to get away with this terrible malpractice. He should be handed over to the parents and they should perform a circumcision on him, by the sounds of the child's crying, it appears that no anasetic was given to the child either. Send these butchers back to Cuba, and bring our doctors back. Once the bank account has been set up, I would also like to make a donation.

My heart goes out to this little boy and charity should start at home, so YOU please set up a fund so we can donate money for this little boy's reconstructive surgery. I've never believed in toy-toying but hell, South Africans should stand up for their rights and having a Cuban doctor operating on our nation's children is a scary thought! Aren't our universities full of students studying medicine? Don't we have enough qualified South African Doctors? Why are our state hospitals filled with Cuban "doctors"? Come on South Africa, forget about Zuma and lets help the people who can't afford medical aid!! This little boy will never be normal if he doesn't get the best surgery money can buy - which unfortunately won't be in South Africa as it seems we've lost all our good doctors to Australia and New Zealand.

This family needs to sue the Department of Health to ensure that they not only pay for pain and suffering but also for all the reconstructive surgery which of course must be performed by leading surgeons. How many mistakes will state hospitals make before they are held accountable?

OMG! This is a horrific case of medical malpractice, I hope a good lawyer will step forward and represent them, not for money but for the long term health and care of this child. My wishes go to the parents and this poor boy, I hope he can get the medical help he needs so badly.
