Destroyed for R300

The woman with the mutilated face surveys the scene speechlessly. The pigpens are empty, the goat kraal deserted. No cattle push toward the watering trough as they used to do – before a single blast from a shotgun changed everything.

All the farm activities at Mathafeni, near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, ceased one day in 2002 when with a single shot an attacker on her farm shattered not only Mariette Nel’s jawbone (she was 47 at the time) but her life.

But, she says with conviction, there will be farming here again. She was born here, worked on the farm from an early age and took over when her parents died in the mid-’90s.

Her life changed on 26 October 2002 when she and her domestic worker, Miriam Mamyembe (59), set out in the farm bakkie to the market with vegetables. At the farm gate someone ran towards the vehicle, pressed a shotgun to her face and pulled the trigger. He made off with a bank bag containing R300.

After two months in hospital a partial reconstruction of Mariette’s face was done. It was badly mutilated and the limited state hospital resources didn’t allow for replacing her teeth and upper lip.

When she returned to the farm in May 2003 nothing was left of her livestock and vegetable gardens.

To make a living Mariette and Miriam started baking and selling cakes and Mariette rented the farmland to a neighbour. Within a year she was R16 000 in arrears with her bond repayments and the bank wanted to repossess the farm.

A group of businesspeople in the town came to her rescue with a loan, which she has repaid with the income from her cake sales.

She finds difficult to go into town. “I can hear people laughing at me. And I just turn away. I’m not saying I was beautiful but I was never awful-looking.”

She must dice or liquidise everything and eats with difficulty.

An ongoing sense of powerlessness has left her furious. “My face is disgusting, my farm has been destroyed and my attacker is a free man.

“And all for R300,” she says.

* The organisation Tabita, is raising funds to pay for more surgery to Mariette’s face which will cost R600 000. Contact Lita Fourie of Tabita on 072-542-7352 or at tabita12@ovi.com

Why isn't the State paying for her plastic surgery? It's the government's withdrawal of the Farm Commandos which have made the farms so unsafe. This poor woman's suffering since this has happened to her, has been just unspeakable. She still can't have a proper meal and is living in abject poverty - having to beg for even the most basic medical care for herself.

    Dear Mariette,
Please never think your face is disgusting. You have a lovely face, and its all in the eyes. We are all behind you as you move forward to have the surgery you should have had in the first place. We admire your indomitable spirit in baking cakes to earn a living. We thank the Indian businessmen who came to your aid to save your farm. Your accident is so horrendous that it just brought tears to my eyes. This letter is to tell you that you are in our prayers and from now on everything is going to be wonderful for you. We hope You magazine will keep us posted as to the fund raising, and we will be doing some music gigs to raise money for your surgery. Natalie, Durban.

God bless you! To hell with the people that laugh, hold your head up and walk proud. You are a fighter and a survivor, few people would have the guts to stand up and do anything to hold onto what they really want!
Take good care of yourself and I believe that you will achieve whatever you want to!

Its sad to hear stories like this, the problems like this keep doing the rounds in this country.not only her suffering, the people that worked there also, yet they didn't try and keep up the farm.probably were responsible for the theft of livestock to.i would only wish her to be brave and face the people head on,eventually the gossip will stop and empathy will reign.i knew a girl whom was badly disfigured at school, she joined us in primary school and as you know kids are harsher than adults when it comes to criticism ,by the time we went to high school,no other standard criticized her,we kind of protected her ,i know she had surgery and today is beautiful and successful.ps she was also exceptionally intelligent and an academic achiever, accomplishing more than most of our standard and i can only learn from her.i would like to remind you that your mind is not disfigured, distorted yes by it all,but not disfigured,be accepting to all the help offered and do not see it as charity but true empathy and you will survive.as for your attacker his fate is locked in and who betide him his punishment.
