Hands murder: my Facebook hell

Julius Meyer (23) is big and muscular but he talks in a whisper. He has become used to hiding. After all, in the past two months it has been said he’s the guy responsible for the gruesome death of Anika Smit (18) of Pretoria whose hands were chopped off (YOU, 1 April 2010).

It all started with a throwaway - and unfortunate - remark Julius made on the social networking site Facebook. Now finally someone else* faces charges for the murder and he hopes the dark cloud that has hung over him will disappear.

The first thing he tells us is, “Let me assure you I definitely didn’t kill her. Our friendship wasn’t close enough for misunderstandings or arguments.”

Julius barely knew Anika; he’d seen her only twice. She was just one of his hundreds of Facebook friends but her death nearly destroyed him. And all because of a comment made out of frustration on his Facebook page.

“If a man stabs you in the back you cut his f*****g hands off!” he wrote in February. He was merely angry with a business partner. “I just meant if someone bullies you, you must stand up to them,” he says. But his words cost him dearly when Anika was murdered two weeks later.

Within days someone had spotted his Facebook entry and two days after that he got a call. “I’m not sure if it really was a journalist or whether it was someone’s idea of a joke,” he says.

The next morning he wanted to post a message to Anika on Facebook but when he logged on he saw messages of condolence because she’d died.

Suddenly there were messages on his Facebook wall accusing him of being a murderer. Within days people were circulating a photograph of him by e-mail, asking the public to help find Anika’s murderer.

Overnight he lost a lot of friends. And clients started to stay away from his restaurant.

“I called the police and offered to come in. They said I wasn’t even on their list of suspects. But according to thousands of people I was still a murderer.

“I won’t say it destroyed me but it was hell,” Julius says.

“I hope my experience helps someone. People must realise Facebook can be destructive and that it’s reckless to spread untested stories.”

* Nico Venter (20), a project manager at the Carousel Casino near Pretoria, has been released on R10 000 bail.

It has been more than a year now and still no murderer has been found -> makes me want to solve it myself. If Anika was suppose 2 have gone 2 school, she must have told someone that she was staying home, or her father did? I dont know if the police have checked her telephone records? something has to be there... ok so she was expecting a guy from a pharmacy to deliver medicine, who else would have known that she was home besides that person and her father? I think that the police are not qualified to do there jobs, they have a brain the size of a pea. I really do think that if they dug a little deeper that they would have caught him long ago... Nico Venter? I dont know if it is him, the police let him out on bail? prop cause they blamed the first person that crossed their path? Did the Dad not tell anyone that he has any business relation to that the daughter was at home cause she was sick? Anika must have sent a message to someone, otherwise this wouldnt have happened? The killer is close, I can feel it, just dig a little deeper and they will find them!!!!

in the society we live today people are warped things like rape, murder and abuse happens in they family so everyone is guilty of a crime that they didn't commit, society if full of nonsense these people who pass comment on others are not innocent themselves, so people before you pass judgement on others just based on a comment get facts first they speak louder than anything else.i am sorry Julius for everything you have been through maybe oneday when you are back on Facebook I will love to chat to you.

My statement was definitely NOT an accusation - it was merely an observation of the FACTS already printed and the right to freedom of speech. You will clearly note in the sentence the words "IF IT WAS" Nico Venter the "SUSPECT", but then again if you are a friend or relative referring to my comment you are bound to be biased and read more into the sentence, as is your “right” to do so…
The type of murder was gruesome and only a sadistic, mean and aggressive type of person would be involved: another “FACT" already printed.. so WHOEVER it was that committed the murder needs to be punished to the MAXIMUM…
Innocent until proven guilty, 100% agreed and that is why most people are glad the Piet Byleveld is on the case so that justice will be served in the right way…

When I read this article and the comment made on FB - I did not see it as a "Threat" I knew exactly what Julius was trying to say. He is right. I also think it takes an immature mind to see it as a threat. All Julius was trying to do was get a point of view across.

I think the killer read the comment made on FB by the innocent person and decided that it was the perfect way to commit a crime and get away with it... The killer was very calculated in their approach and knew that the person who made the comment would be blamed for it, therfore taking the focus off them and buying him time................ I say it was very well thought out and planned... This is a very sick and sardistic person and if it is Nico Venter "the suspect" he should NEVER have been given bail !!!

I am so sorry Julius. The family of this poor girl are grieving for a terrible crime done to their daughter and my heart goes out to them. I feel for you too, as to be blamed for something so heinous is like a death in your heart. Be strong and know that truth will ultimately prevail.
What a sad, destructive and horrible way to learn the world is not all good and keep our spur of the moment comments off a website.

Perhaps all of us will think twice before saying things we don't really mean. Perhaps also think twice before putting comments on Facebook etc. I hope the truth will prevail.
