'My child killed by that satan'

Jeannine with her 15-month-old daughter, Mecayla.

Marié du Plessis recalls how upset her daughter was when she heard the woman who’d destroyed her life had been sentenced to just seven years in jail.

‘‘My life is a mess and Cézanne Visser won’t even be locked up for seven years, then she’ll go on with her life!’’ Jeannine du Plessis (21) had said angrily.

She was one of the young victims of sex criminals Visser, known as Advocate Barbie, and Dirk Prinsloo, and was the state’s main witness in their trial.

Jeannine was 13 when she was drugged and indecently assaulted by Visser and Prinsloo. The experiences changed her life tragically. She ran away and became self-destructive, turning to a sordid life of sex and drug addiction. And despite several rehabilitation stints she returned to her drug habit, even though she had a baby with an unknown father and had recently started a new relationship that gave her hope.

Just when Jeannine had finally decided to quit drugs and start afresh she took her life. A week after Visser was sentenced she put a rope around her neck and jumped out of a tree, presumably to be free of her grim past.

‘‘I’m bitter; very, very bitter,’’ Marié says. ‘‘Satan appeared in the form of a snake and her name was Cézanne Visser and she came to destroy my daughter’s life. She [Visser] had so many opportunities to come and say she was sorry but she never did. Jeannine had thought she would sit for 20-plus years.’’

Marié and Jeannine’s father, Pieter, console themselves with the thought that their daughter is finally broken free of the demons that haunted her since 2004.

I think that it would be unfair to blame Ms Visser alone. Even though she might
have a role in this tragic event, I think the blame should be evenly devided. Parents
also are to blame for not helping her and even though they knew of her drug and sex
addictions. So please don't be so nieve!!!!!

I agree with Sue. Why does the girl kill herself 8 years after the incident occured?
Why did the State not help this girl. It is not clear to me. According to some internet
news sites she had an ongoing drug abuse problem from the age of 12. Why did
our State Deapertments not have an opportunity to assist the girl. I personally
hold the parents responsible and then the State. The Supreme court is the castodian
of all children, they follow up and uses her to testify against Cezanne Visser and yet
they knew she has a serious drug problem, but they chose to ignore this. A lot of
people has a lot to answer for. What about social workers and criminologists ?????

Firstly why is it that when a person rapes 1 girl/boy he gets life sentence but when something as horrible and sad like this happens then practically nothing gets done. The law is confused and needs to take another look at it's system... Marie, I can only imagine the pain you and your family must be going through and I am so sorry that this had to happen to your family but be strong and remember that God sees everything, put your faith in him and he will carry you through this hard time. Advocate Barbie and Dirk Prinsloo will have to answer to our Father one day.

Oh my goodness Sue, can this story be "far more shocking?" I was truely horrified to read it. I had hoped her life before all of this was peaceful, but after reading your comment I am not so sure now. Thank you- YOU MAGAZINE- for bringing these important issues to light.

Jeannine's story is far more shocking than the 2 people blamed for her suicide. But the ones who know her true story are hiding for many reasons. Maybe one day soon, all the guilty parties that is to blame for her unhappy life from when she was a tiny little girl will come out with the truth, and nothing but the truth.

My sincere apologies to the parents of Jeannine, I mean`t to say her story needs to be heard by the public of South Africa told by the ones who love her. I am sorry if my message was confusing. This is no excuse but I live in the USA and only get to read updates after the fact.

Just as I thought, after reading about these two monsters, the victims will live the life sentance. I am shocked that there is not a national outcry about this. This is way too short of a sentence! what was the judge thinking? Jeannine, please stay strong and get your story out there, the public needs to hear it.
