Province and Sharks fans aren’t complimentary about the way the Blue Bulls play rugby.
They call it 10-man rugby: drive with the forwards and kick – ugly rugby. Nevertheless, Blue Bulls rugby is often also winning rugby.
And now Heyneke Meyer (44), the man who’s seen as the chief strategist behind Blue Bulls rugby in recent years, is the new Springbok head coach.
He took command of the Pretoria side more than 10 years ago when they were down and out and made them a winning side again.
In 2007 the Bulls became the first South African team to win the coveted Super Rugby trophy. With Meyer at the helm they’ve also won the Currie Cup four times. Now everyone wonders whether he’ll apply his Blue Bulls recipe to Springbok rugby.
No Western Province or Sharks player will complain if the men in green and gold win playing 10-man rugby. Winning is winning – pretty or not.
