SA’s smallest baby

Baby hope at birth
Baby hope at birth

Doctors told the young mom there was no way her baby would survive - abortion was the only way out. But Robyn Samuels (21) steadfastly believed her child would make it. Yet when baby Hope was born 13 weeks early she was the size of a human heart - and about as heavy as a tin of beans.

But Hope has proved she’s a little fighter, despite weighing only 390 grams at birth. She’s the smallest surviving baby born in SA and is happy and healthy today.

She’s four months old now, although still much smaller than a baby her age should be, weighing just more than 2 kg. But doctors say she’s perfectly healthy - rare for a baby born at 27 weeks.

What a strong little girl. I was born at 25 weeks and was 950g but dropped to 820g - doctors were very concerned but I am a healthy 30 year old and am proof that premmies grow up to be as strong and successful as full terms babies.

I was 28 weeks pregnant and in labour when the doctor told me my daughter would not survive and if she did he couldn't tell me how deformed she would be. She spent 2 months in the neonatal ward before she was allowed home. Although she initially took a little longer to catch up to 'normal' milestones, she soon did and is now at 22 years old a normal (in no way deformed), very intelligent young lady. God truly is the giver of life and I'm thankful for His mercy daily.
