Slimming pills in the spotlight

The advertisement instantly caught Mandy Saayman’s attention. “Forget about demanding gym sessions, starvation diets and those continuous feelings of frustration and heartbreak,” the ad declared.

Mandy (45), a Pretoria lawyer, didn’t need much encouragement to try a new diet product. Over the past few years she’d accumulated weight around her waist and a pill that was 100 per cent natural and guaranteed miracle results sounded fantastic, she thought.

But Mandy wasn’t surprised when she recently heard news that all might not be well with Simply Slim. She knew from day one that there was no way the capsule she took in the morning contained only herbs.

She lost 7 kg in two months and, like many other users, paid little attention to the news the product contained high dosages of sibutramine, a Schedule 5 stimulant and appetite suppressant that may be used only under doctor’s supervision.

Soon after the news was released the Medicines Control Council (MCC) summarily banned sales of Simply Slim early this month.

Mandy openly admits her appearance is so important to her she doesn’t mind taking a chance with her health.

Graham Alexander, clinical psychologist at Chrysalis Clinic in Cape Town, says he’s not surprised people put their health on the line for an attractive figure. He has treated people with eating disorders and weight problems for 20 years.

“There is no slimming product that offers an instant cure for obesity,” he says. “Advertisements should be strictly regulated or completely banned.”

This is exactly where the problem lies - advertisers of slimming products aren’t properly regulated.

Harris Steinman of Cape Town, a medical doctor and consumer activist, believes South African consumers have been misled for so long it’s little wonder people don’t realise the dangers of slimming products such as Simply Slim.

“The Medicines Control Council expects companies to be able to produce scientific research to prove supplementary medicines are safe and effective but this is rarely evaluated or monitored,” he says.

He has made more than 100 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) and through his efforts several advertisements with unfounded slimming claims have been banned, such as those of Homemark’s Peal Away the Pounds, Homemark Slender C, Homemark SlimCoffee, Bioslim’s Fat Attack, Once a Day and Soup Lite, Glohealth Hoodia Slender Gel, LeanOR and Verimark 02-Lean.

Some manufacturers simply change the product’s name or replace one ingredient when they’re criticised.

“The authorities who were supposed to protect our health over the past 10 years have failed lamentably. Any company can put a life-threatening product on the market and there are no proper controls preventing them from doing so,” Steinman says.

I never could understand the medical ethics behind drug testing, especially in the early days of HIV when South Africa designed some of the top drugs that were withdrawn after their initial drug trials had been so successful. They needed to now go for official testing and only once they were passed could they be used again by the sufferers who had found their astounding relief from their out breaks.

It was explained to me then that people in need are no longer rational as often they become desperate. In the case of AIDS they are ill and dying in extreme discomfort but in the case of obesity it is even more fundamental, it has to do with one's self image. How can we, the desperate, and I count myself as much a desperate as any other person who's body is no longer slim and ideal, be regarded as objective about what damage we may be allowing a drug to do to us.

Some years ago thalidomide was given to an unsuspecting population of nauseous, morning sick, women during pregnancy. They never thought twice about taking the drug that made them feel so much better nor did they FEEL any worse for taking it. But the problem only came later when some of these ladies gave birth to children with dreadful deformities of their legs and arms. So ladies if the medical profession tells you that there is a danger connected with a drug, then you can be sure that they have no axe to grind, 10:1 it will be a case of the company will be very angry. It would be so awful if You or your mother, sister or aunt was the one that it disagreed with and you or she passed away because of it. Think of those left behind - you would have a stunning corpse with very little fat and it would have been a case of a body to die for.

I tried SS and lost VERY little. I had a few friends who tried SS and they were happy with results. However I am sure in time they will put the weight back on. I firmly believe that the only way to lose weight is to exercise and eat correctly. I started gyming and eating correctly 6 months ago and have lost 21 kg's so far. I have never been to gym before and didnt think I would be able to change my eating habits the way I have. So my advice to all of you wanting to lose weight is to try and do exercise at least 3 times a week. You do not need to belong to a gym to exercise. Eat on the 80/20 principle. If you eat healthily 80% of the time then the other 20% you can "cheat" and have the treats you want. There is no quick fix to losing weight. It takes years to put the weight on and takes a long time to get it off but even if you lose 1/2 kilo a week it is weight off...

The old SS was amazing. I have just finished my first "new" pack and am extremely dissapointed. My energy levels have not changed, not even 0.5kg loss in weight and my appertite is more than ever. I think we are now just being taken for a ride........after so much success this is really sad!!

I was extatic with the weight I lost on the OLD Simply Slim (10kg's in 4 months) and that over Christmas. I was not grossly overweight when I started, weighed 79 kg and I'm 1.72 meters tall. When it was pulled off the market I didnt continue as I had no tablets letf, since taking the new tablet I have found it to be ineffective, I havent lost a gram. When I complained to my supplier I was advised to continue, she guarantees that it is just as good as the old supply. Two weeks later - I'm still waiting for results. The new tablet doesnt make you thirsty and doesnt take away your appitite. Regret to advise that I wont buy it again!!

I used Simply Slim and for once I did not waste my money. I cannot stick to a diet - and never will. I was looking good and feeling even better. When the product was pulled off the market, I gained all the weight that I had lost. I have read the comments below and I must say I am sceptical about using it again, as I am afraid the pills will not work anymore. Please share your experiences with the new pills ladies.

Mona Grant, the thing that's laughable is your attitude my dear. I don't argue the fact that the product works/doesn't work.. it certainly worked for me as I lost 10kg in the 2 months I was on the product. At least you brought a smile to my face with your "laughable" comment.. I'm now 6 months pregnant and happy with my gift from God.

I am so upset that Simply Slim will not be re-launching their product again. I bought it and used 3 of the tablets and then the whole story on the news. The few days i did take it it definately took away my appetite, and I did not think of food the whole time. My problem is just that the agent I bought it from is just ignoring my calls and will not be refunding me or anything. Very unprofessional.

its the first time i hear about ss but surely if it can be relaunched i would jump in that ship with

Well it worked, irrispective of what dr's say!!!People are now robbing others from their anti retral viral medication and is used as a drug..Any thing can be bad for you it is how you use it. Braaivleis causes cancer, raw meat is bad .. hell what is next. let us make our own decisions and furthermore...why can't they take crime away like they take diet pills away..something works no it is bad for us..why drs?because of your loss of income?

I have to agree with most of the people here. And to be honest, theres like 2 people complaining for every 1000 that are ECSTATIC with the results. I see no problem with the product and if some people FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS most of them wouldn't have had any of the problems they complained about.

And now the rest of us have to suffer because of it. COME BACK MIRACLE WORKER SIMPLY SLIM PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Can Simply Slim hurry up!! The best and only working pill on the market. Can't wait for the relaunch as I need to lose 4kg. Already lost 9kg and looking hot!!! No side effects. Everyone that had side effects in my social circle was on some other form of medication. Come Simply Slim, we are waiting!! Would buy on the blackmarket if I could find any, but all the agents are so honest that they returned all the products. Just shows!!!! GO Simply Slim.

    2010/03/17 09:26:01 AM
Okay, I find all these delays on the re-launch so disturbing…let me tell you why….

I am a chronic gout sufferer and have to take medication every day of my life for this condition. When I started taking Simply Slim I was gout free, pain free and could cease taking my medication. However, since my supply ran out at the end of December, I decided to take the recommended 2 week break RESULT: I have had gout since the 5th of January to date, living on anti-inflamataries and quarterzone and now have an increased dose of the medication I was on previously……some days are so bad that I can barely walk!!!!

So whilst I continue to live with the most unbearable pain, I wait in hope for the re-launch of the most amazing product I have ever been exposed too (very seriously - any boxes lying around will be most welcome – last time I checked we lived in a democratic society and are allowed the freedom of choice – no???)

    I desperately await GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!

I just waited till I stopped breastfeeding totry Simply Slim. I would much rather spend
time with my girls than go to the gym in that time. I am not a "pill popper", so I was a bit
sceptical to be honest. I lost ALL my baby weight in 7 weeks and I dropped almost 2 dress sizes.
I followed theinstructions down to the last dotted i and crossed t. The worst side effect for
me was my excessive thirst. I drank Simply Slim only for those 7 weeks. I have maintained my weight since
and I have not picked up any of it. I am in the habit now of drinking water which is wonderful.
I would not recommend Simply Slim to individuals who are excessively over weight, as I agree
with the fact that there is no miracle cure - but to loose 10kg or so, quick and easily - GO FOR IT!!!
Oh Yes - blaming Simply Slim cause it influenced your contraceptive ... LAUGHABLE!!!

To all you ladies singing the praises of Simply Slim, please think again. I was on the product for 2 months, lost a few kilo's and FELL PREGNANT while on the pill!! No other diet pill has ever worked against "the pill" and if I could I swear I would sue Simply Slim for the effect it's had on my life and my relationship. I say ban it, I'll never buy "proudly South African" again.

I am a strong believer in Simply Slim, I have taken it personaly myself lost 8kg in 6 weeks, not following any diet and quite restricted to food groups sitting in Kuwait. But tried to eat as healthy as could be expected (Burger king) every now and then. I had loads of energy, drank plenty of water which was good as I dont fancy water at all. Never slept better in a long time, over all i felt on top of the world. When I returned my Mum was batteling to loose weight age 58,on high blood pressure med,and wala Simply Slim done it for her, she went from a size 18 to a size 12 in 3 months. Had no side effects and still claims she has never felt better. I then put my fianc'e and my dad on the product and everyone of us had wonderful results with not a single side effect. Seeing is believing!!!! I then bought into Simply Slim and became an agent of this product. I have seen results in over 10 000 people, that put a smile on my face from ear to ear, not for the quick buck in my pocket but because I saw the life changing experiece in peoples lives.... That nobody can explain unless you have been there to see it, and truly from the bottom of my heart no bad media can take that away from me or my clients. Think everyone should start seeing the bigger picture and not always believe what we read in media articles but give Simply Slim a chance to prove to us all that they are here to change peoples lives not kill anyone... Also if the tests came back positive for sibutramine don't you think that would of also been published on the front page of Beeld? Not defending Head office because Im an agent just stating that I to would like us to get to the bottom of this as we are disapointing the clients that do love Simply Slim, and that have set goals to change there life....... awaiting the re launch of Simply Slim patiently!!!!!!

I bought my first pack of simply slim under a month ago after a friend suggested it to me (in fact, right before the recall).

I suffer from an underactive thyroid - as a result, I have a very slow metabolism. For the past year and a half I have tried everything. The no starch diet, the soup diet, cohen diet, the healthy eating plan diet, the starvation and / or detox diet. Nothing worked. I started exercising once a day as well (six days a week), in conjunction with whatever diet I was following at that time. Lost a kilo or two here and there and then started exercising twice a day. Still, lost a kilo or two here and there, but no matter what I did, my weight would yo-yo up and down and I was always within the first 4 to 5 kilos from when I started dieting.

My doctor is well aware of my thyroid problem as she diagnosed me in the first place. Needless to say, when i approached my doctor about my weight problem, she was not sympathetic or helpful at all.

I am not finished with my first pack of SS and have lost almost 10kgs. I am convinced that people (and I think women more than men) just have a different "make-up" when it comes to metabolism. That is why you often get the skinny girl that can eat whatever she wants, and not get fat. I also believe that whatever the ingredients in SS, it works because it speeds up metabolism. I have no side effects and will continue to take the tablets. I suggest that those that are opposed to SS get their metabolism and thyroid checked, 'cause I speak from experience when I say that if you have a problem with either, you will struggle for years to loose they weight that SS helped me loose in less than a month, no matter which diet you follow.

Iv been taking Simply Slim since August last year and am quite happy with the product
in the beginig I did have sleepless nights, but that soon wore off. Why are we all happy
to follow all the bad new and forget all the good these tablet have done. I am not a
"follow the leader" type I can make up my own mind, I will continue to buy Simplly Slim.
I havent changed my eating habits which werent unhealthy to start off with.
I cant wait for the new Simply Slim packs to come out again.

I agree with kim (7 days ago). It's the first weight loss product that really shows results and the opposition couln't handle it, so they infiltrated a fake ss out of jelousy. Now what? Now everything must get to a stand still, just because there are a few fake boxes in circulation. It's really not fair of the authorities.I will always stand by SS and will use the new one, because Simply Slim gave my life back (which couldn't happen with all the many other products I tried). I lost 15kg, and still wanna lose 10kg. With other stuff I would have been in dispair, but with SS I see light in the tunnel and know it's doable.
Thank you a trillion times Simply Slim.

Funny people smoke, drink and are eating foods laced with pesticides and
who knows what else but the world comes to an end when they find that
their diet pill is not natural - wake up people - why are you resorting to a diet
pill if you are so into the 'natural' way! I have lost 7kg since taking Simply Slim,
I have boundless energy and exercise everyday (sometimes twice a day), my food
intake has decreased and believe me I am feeling incredible so to those out there
who have so much to say - boo hoo to you - MISS CAMPS BAY HERE I COME!!!

Just commenting on Adele, where do us business woman get the time to excercise, we are busy from morning till night must we cut into our sleep time to exercise, yes we might be eating right but i havent lost weight so i give up and people who suffer from depression shouldnt take them then...And i full on agree with what kim has said cause i think thats right...

I was totally unaware of the whole debacle surrounding these pills when I looked at them and finally decided to buy them and the reason was because the were "natural".

They certainly gave me lots of energy and helped to control my appetite which was naturally I thought a good thing. Well slowly but surely I started noticing that I was sleeping worse and worse and that my heart was beating so fast but still I didn't link it with these tablets or maybe I just didn't want to as I like so many others have also been looking for that magic cure. After 11 days I went to Pretoria for the weekend and then from all sides I was bombared with the bad of Simply Slim and by the Saturday I confided in my best friend and she just about freaked out as these tablets have seriously damaged her health. So I'm definitely glad that they are no longer available under the misconception of "being natural" and causing health problems for some people. May the people who claim that they had no side effects not find out differently in the future.

I have learned the hard way that there is NO other way to loose weight than to watch what you are eating and to exercise and the sooner women start realising it and start doing it they will be looking less for miracle cures for fat and will have no risk to their own health. To eat healthy, drink water and exercise turns back the clock and makes you look younger apart from the benefit of loosing weight.

So ladies get out your walking shoes and stop making excuses and looking for magic potions. It's actually so easy, you just have to start DOING it!
  37. Denise

I think it is terribly risky to use diet pills. One should rather follow proper eating habits and do more exercise.

Are you 100% sure that all the tablets have had the schedule 5 drug in it. or are you just going
going on what everyone is saying. because everyone i know including myself have
been taking the tablets with no side effects except for losing weight. Somebody is
jealous of us girls who have been losing weight. maybe doctors are upset that
they are not getting a cut from this wonderful product that is making so many people
loose weight. some girls only came out with issues once the product was recalled (whats the big issue doctors prescribe reductil and cipla trim to girls
who want to loose weight with the schedule 5 drug in it. but nobody complains they
just take it. even weighless are partners in ciplatrim according to mary holroyd) or maybe
other diet tablet companies are worried that girls wont take their tablets anymore.
there are people out there selling a product that works and now they have had no income
for 3 weeks and the people losing weight cant get anymore tablets. (maybe we should
sue for lose of income and weight (ha ha)
