Waterkloof family's fall from grace

SHE had it all: lovely home, successful husband, talented son and a thriving nursery school. Now she has lost her home and several other properties, her son is in jail, her husband has been disgraced and the family is deeply in debt.
Mariëtte Becker still runs her preschool – and is clinging to her self-esteem.

Her son, Christoff (24) is one of the so-named Waterkloof Four who beat a homeless man to death.
Her husband, Christo – until last year headmaster at Pretoria’s Hoërskool Waterkloof – was recently in hospital, reportedly after suffering either an epileptic seizure or a heart attack.

Pretoria is buzzing with rumours that he took an overdose of pills. The picture of confidence – some said arrogance – during his son’s high-profile trial, he was sacked amid allegations of financial irregularities involving R5 million.
Mariëtte refuses to believe her husband would try to kill himself. ‘‘He would never take an overdose,’’ she says adamantly.

The family’s life imploded in December 2001 when Christoff and three friends, Frikkie du Preez, Gert van Schalkwyk and Reinach Tiedt, brutally assaulted and killed an unemployed man in Moreleta Park, Pretoria. After a lengthy trial and several appeal attempts they were jailed for 12 years.

In spite of their conviction Mariëtte doesn’t accept her son committed the crime. ‘‘My Chrissie would never do something like that,’’ she says.

“Before Chrissie’s court case we had a dream life. Now everything is shattered. But it comforts me to think God has a purpose for everything.’’

She’s allowed to visit Christoff once a week, for half an hour on Saturdays, but she knows little about his life behind bars. ‘‘Chrissie doesn’t actually tell us about it.’’

Mariëtte doesn’t bemoan the loss of her glamorous, wealthy lifestyle. ‘‘Of course it was nice to be able to buy all those fine things but I realise now you need only one house, one car and a little bit of food to survive.’’

Me thinks a national signed petition should be the order of the day, also to expose poor judgement and judges.

"Stranger" can you actually prove that they did it? I studied the court documents in detail and the evidence entered into court could not, under any circumstances, prove their guilt. The body linked to this case actually contradicts the State's case. Getting hung up on the personality of any one of these individuals is laughable. If bad attitude was a reason for incarceration, most South Africans would be in jail and our legal processes are supposed to weed out individual perception in favour of the facts.

Google “Avoiding the herd” and share your insights with me please? So far I have been unable to find any evidence that supports their conviction.

Stranger it seems that you are a stranger to the truth as well. Everyone knows that this case makes NO sense at all.

You people don't know what you are talking about. I use to be friends with them, very close with one of them and they did the deed, so they must do the time.

How can you say they killed a homeless man if no assaulted man were ever found?
Wat about the forensic cellphonerecords that prove them to be elsewhere...the motorcellphone ..that was described in the insident!
What about the actual accused ( the socalled state-witnesses) THEY were reported to police by Woodhill Colledge because of their strange and bad behavior !
They then BLAMED 8 other kids ( FOR THEIR OWN WRONGDOINGS) ...what happened to the other kids that they blamed?
What about the lies that the socalled statewitnesses were caught out in court ?
And by the way ...how come they were set loose after all their lies!

Yes , come to think of it ... the so-called statewitnessses were caught telling lies over and over again? How come they were not procecuted as their story didnt add up ? I heard a lot of fishy stories of Kotze .... the retired pensioner that admitted he was clueless througout the trail !

How could the Waterkloof 4 ever be convicted if the forensic cellphone records of the car (that 2 of the 4 were driving ) proved them to be elsewere at that time? How could they be convicted if a body was found a month AFTER the night that they tried to stop 3 burgulars (running with stolen TV s and other goods) and they did not suceed because they were confronted by the burgulars and as they were only kids and afraid of the dark they backed off ? How could the medical evidence being NO bruses on the body be ignored? Something smells Fishy !!!!!

The waterkloof 4 should not be convicted because their forensic cellphone records proved that they were elsewere on 2nd Desember 2001! I know Christoff and he is a great guy ... always trying to help others ... and therefore tried to stop burgulars in November 2001! They were in danger and therefore left the schene after the criminals went for them ! How could the pensioner Len Kotze ever convict them ? Interesting is the fact that the so-called statewitnesses was the ACTUAL ACCUSED and they were reported to police for their strange and bad behavior.. by Woodhill Colledge! They then blamed others for their own wrongdoing !

Maybe the pretty boy is getting back in prison what he and his friends did to the homeless man. What goes around comes around.
