Return of the vampires

If you’re one of the millions who’ve seen the trailer on YouTube you’ll know plenty of action awaits when Eclipse begins at cinemas across South Africa on 30 June. Real addicts can attend midnight shows on 29 June at NuMetro theatres countrywide.

“Just as you think you’re going to get the same story, all of a sudden it completely changes,” Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, says.

There’s no doubt the third film in the Twilight series, based on Stephenie Meyer’s books, will again bring the money rolling in. The first, Twilight, made more than $408 million (about R3,1 billion) and the secnd, New Moon, made $709 million (about R5,4 billion) at the box office.

The three lead actors in one of the silver screen’s most addictive love triangles - Kristen, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner - became overnight superstars thanks to the films. Their bank balances have never looked so good and they can now pick and choose their roles.

Robert (24), who plays vampire Edward Cullen, recently completed the drama Bel Ami with Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci and is now working on another drama, Water for Elephants, with Reese Witherspoon.

Kristen (20) has made three movies in between the Twilight films and there are two more in the pipeline before she starts work on the last film in the vamp series, Breaking Dawn.

After the first film Taylor (18), who plays werewolf Jacob Black, had to fight to keep his role. He played only a small part in Twilight and the producers didn’t think he would measure up to Robert in the second one. How wrong they were. He’s proved to be one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars.

Twilight not only brought Robert and Kristen film fame, it brought them romance in real life.

Insiders say Robert knows how to use romantic gestures to stop Kristen’s fiery temper, like the time she shouted at him on the set of Eclipse for arriving a day late after a trip to London. In typical Edward Cullen style his sweet words soon had her in tears.

“Rob told Kristen he wants to spend the rest of his life with her,” the source says. “He’s proposed and they’ll get married one day. He knows Kristen will make a perfect wife and can’t imagine being with anyone else.”
