Actress' anorexia ordeal

Isidingo’s Jess Webster is painfully thin. Obsessive dieting and exercising has left her close to a breakdown. And actress Kate Tilley (28), who portrays Jess in the soapie, knows the agony of anorexia. ‘‘I can relate to what Jess is going through,’’ she says, recalling her seven-year battle with the eating disorder from the age of 13.

She was a born performer and confident but things changed when she went to a convent at 13. ‘‘I have a problem with authority. I hated people telling me what to do. Then there were all these rich girls. I started second-guessing myself, thinking I’m not good enough, not pretty enough, not rich enough.’’

Anorexia is not simply about food and eating, Kate says. ‘‘It’s more complicated. It’s about your sense of self-worth and feeling in control.’’ She stopped eating properly and shed weight, even though she was petite.

‘‘When you’re anorexic it makes you feel proud to lose weight but it’s ironic because when people comment on it they’re not saying it in a nice way. So you start being critical of yourself. You feel horrible and want to cover things up. One thing leads to another and it becomes a vicious cycle.’’

Her weight plummeted to 35 kg but she sought professional help only in 2001, in her second year of drama studies at Wits University. Three months at an eating disorder clinic restored her sense of normality.

But anorexia will always be in the background, she says. ‘‘You always need support, whether from a psychologist or dietician, so you don’t relapse. I’m still seeing a therapist.’’

Kate knows people still say she’s skinny. ‘‘But that’s the way I am. It’s my body shape.’’ Now she eats six small meals a day and never skips meals.

isidingo/you don't patronise us as your loyal viewers by telling us that "her character" has anorexia. anyone with half a brain cell knows that isidingo had to rewrite thier script according to tilleys o.c.d issues

It's obvious that Kate is still battling the disorder. If she claims to be recovered and at her normal weight, then that would seem like denial. I also wonder whether it's helpful to be portraying a fictitious character with the disorder - would the process help the real person to deal with the problem, or might it be a way to disconnect with the reality - to project onto the character?

I like the comments, I think Kate is a fantastic actress and I greatly admire what she is doing!! (Jess) embraces the disorder so accurately and brilliantly and I think her role is touching many of those who suffer from eating disorders, but how far is this going to go?? Her health should come first!

We all behind you Kate, all the way! Just look out for yourself!!

I used to watch Isidingo loads but just don't get around to it anymore :( I am sure Kate/Jess is MUCH thinner than when she first came on!? Seriously guys, I think she looks painfully thin...so thin in fact that I (a not-so-big internet "surfer") am sitting here at midnight on my laptop googling 'Isidingo-anorexic' to see what is really going on with Kate/Jess!! I was hoping that there were some special effects or something to attribute to her miniscule frame but sadly she really looks like that!! Shame man. Kate, you need a rest and some help. Good luck xxx

Kate I love your role in Isidingo and think it's really cool and loads of fun with Calvin. You're beautiful and talented and have everything going for you.

I think it's very admirable what you're doing. My concern for you as a person first before an actress, are you strong enough emotionally / mentally to deal with all this? Is this not a regression for you in the wrong direction. I know for me in my past struggles and even presently the diease is all consuming and can so destroy you. I worry because you're now daily having to focuse on it for your role (currently), that it'll take you down the wrong path again. It's great that you are seeing a therapist, but at the end of the day you're the one trapped inside with this destructive monster, destroying you. You are the only one who is with yourself 24/7. You simply have to be BIGGER that the beast trapped inside of you; which I know for myself is an ongoing daily struggle. Kate I just would not want for you to be harmed in any way. As your role in Isidingo I would want you to get better and things to happen with you and Calvin and not to now be sterio typed. That's the other dangerous issues, your health and publically. Look what happened to Karen Carpenter. I certainly would not want that to happen to you as well. Are the Isidingo writers / directors fully aware of the negative impact it can have on you (Mentally and emotionally) and the public out there?

Kate, best of luck. I am sure that you are fully ware of these things and I am sure that you would not have gone into this without realing the consequences thereof. I hope and pray that you are successful in what you hope to achieve together with the Isidingo team. Just always remember that your health comes first no matter what the circumstances are.

I saw Kate in the Rosebank Mall late last year. She really is terribly thin.... and looks way older than her 28 years. I was shocked and surprised at how thin she is. Obviously on the telly, you look a little bigger than you are --- so for her to be soooo skinny like that on telly - and I have a widescreen --- means she's very very underweight... which I saw with my own eyes late last year. I think it's awesome that she's sharing her story. What a brave woman. Kate - you are beautiful and talented and have a magnificent vibrance about you. Whatever you do - just be healthy. If you are naturally thin as you say --- that's cool --- just make sure you're getting ALL the vitamins and nitrients you need. x x

I had the pleasure of seeing my cousin Kate in November 2009 for the first time since 1996. What a beautiful, joyful, truly lovely person she is. She has her struggles just like everyone else. I admire her for her bravery & commitment to bringing eating disorders into the South African spotlight. She makes healthy choices & has the full support of her family. We love you, Kate!

I agree she does look like she is still battling with anorexia ,although she says that she is eating healthy I dont think so but only she would know.
She is an actor and a role model for our children so she should look a bit more healthier.

hi there, this is a very sad story. as a recovered anorexic i understand her battles, and yes even in recovery it is a daily struggle.

what really bothers me about this article, is that Kate Tilley still looks extremely thin, and i see no difference in her weight during her struggle with the disease. she still appears to be very sick.

while its great that You are trying to educate people on this very real disease, it would be great to see more of a success story, as i really dont think that this is.

i hope for her sake that she is healed though....its not easy!
