‘Doughnut’ bread sticks



They won’t believe you when you say you made these sweet doughnut-textured bites with bread.

Serves: 6 and more
Preparation: 10 min
Cooking: 15 min

  • 1 loaf bread, unsliced
  • 500 ml (2 c) flour
  • 375 ml (1½ c) sugar
  • 5 ml (1 t) baking powder
  • 2,5 ml (½ t) cinnamon
  • 2,5 ml (½ t) ginger
  • 500 ml (2 c) buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 5 ml (1 t) vanilla essence
  • oil for deep frying

1. Cut bread into sticks. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl whisk buttermilk, eggs and vanilla essence. Pour into dry ingredients and stir until mixed.

2. In batches dip the bread into the batter. Place over a wire rack.

3. Heat oil in a deep pot; when heated add coated bread to oil and cook for 3 minutes or until golden brown.
