If you care about your skin, your bathroom is likely to be full of lotions and potions that claim to keep your complexion clear. But it’s just as much about what you consume as what you slather on. And when it comes to food, some products are much worse than others for causing pimples.
“The best weapon against skin ageing is your fork,” top nutritionist and skin specialist Karen Fischer told MailOnline.
“Eating the right foods supplies your skin with the nutrients it needs to produce new collagen, fight AGEs [Advanced Glycation End products] and look healthier and younger.”
If you want to keep your skin clear, it could help to avoid the following foods.
Watermelon and dates
They might seem like healthy snacks, but beware of high GI foods. These are absorbed into the bloodstream at super speed and can trigger hormonal fluctuations, which could affect acne. Hormone insulin is believed to play a part in producing sebum, which blocks pores and causes spots.
Many of us start the day with a bowl of cereal, with healthy brands particularly popular among those watching their weight. The problem is, many of these still contain a large amount of sugar, with anything exceeding 15 per cent deemed high. Sugar can cause skin to lose plumpness, speeding the ageing process.
And what goes on cereal? Milk! Unfortunately, the dairy product is another thought to have a negative impact on your complexion. The hormones are believed to have an impact on acne, with skimmed milk seeming the worst in studies. Experts say minimising dairy intake is the way forward for acne sufferers.
Finding yourself suffering from more breakouts over the festive period? It could be all that booze on offer over Christmas and New Year. The sugar and alcohol have a drying effect and can cause redness, while the risk of bags under the eyes and wrinkles is also upped. Consider making January your detox month – you could also fundraise for a charity by avoiding booze for 31 days.
Mothers give them to babies and supermodels and celebrities claim to snack on them when they want to lose weight. But rice cakes contain unrefined carbs, which are broken down into sugar by the body. This can lead to AGEs forming, compromising the suppleness and colour of the skin.
