Wait! Don’t forget weights when working out

Many of us want to shape up before summer comes back around, so we can be ready to hit the beach.

But what’s the best way to really lose weight? Celebrity fitness trainer Kathy Kaehler, who’s trained Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts, says weights are a girl’s best friend when it comes to losing inches off your body.

“Lifting weights (is my favourite fat-busting exercise),” Kathy told Mail Online. “Believe it or not, when you lift weights you lose weight. It helps with building up your metabolism and making it rev more.

“A lot of the time people think that if they just do cardio they’ll lose weight and their legs will get tight or their butt will lift but unfortunately, that’s not the case. You really need to add in the weight training to put resistance on the muscle and get that body to change.”

And if the weight machines and barbell at the gym intimidate you, think about using your own weight instead of equipment. Squats, lunges, planking and push ups and pull ups and planks all put resistance on the muscles and can be done at the gym, out in the open or even in front of the TV.

But when it comes to Kathy’s most reliable type of exercise, the fitness guru says nothing beats the humble walk.

“I think walking is the best way to stay in shape for life,” she smiled. “It’s easy, you can do it anywhere, you can do it alone or with someone. All you need are good shoes, you can even do it when you’re on vacation.

“You can make it hard or even harder than that. A routine of walking after every meal to help digestion is my favourite habit.”
