It’s not yet clear just how long the chain is, but photos shared on social media show the chain extends from at least Muizenberg to Claremont — roughly 22 km.

“So many people on Main Rd that we’ve closed it,” one activist tweeted from Claremont’s busiest road.

Residents on the other side of the city, on West Coast Road past Tableview, had also started joining hands.

Early-risers even formed a chain of their own on Lion’s Head.

According to earlier reports, organisers hoped the chain would stretch all the way to the city centre.
