12 Pinteresting ways to display succulents

When I moved into a flat recently I thought my days of gardening were over. Then a friend gave me a succulent for Christmas, followed by another for my birthday in January. And before I knew it I had a small succulent “garden” going. Here’s what it looks like, displayed on a distressed picture frame on a side table.

Even though it’s the teeniest patch of green, I get lots of pleasure from it. The plants are so generous with their beauty yet ask so little in return – just a minute amount of water once a week.

There are lots of lovely ideas on Pinterest for showing off these hardy beauties. Here are a few of my favourites. There’s even a selection of ways to use succulents for weddings.

Big and bold

This garden makes spectacular use of succulents, both in beds and tucked between slab steps.

Patio edging

The creator of this pretty succulent strip garden has used gravel to cover the soil and create a contrasting texture to the smooth patio surface.

Planters stacked with upturned pots in between to space them apart, then filled with a riotous variety of succulents. So pretty for a stoep or patio.

Filling the cracks

You can tuck low-growing succulents into the smallest spaces. This planting between two strips of cement has an almost bonzai feeling, with added interest from a mini boulder. A nice idea to use with railway sleepers too.

Love these caged mini-gardens. And you could even use them as table centrepieces when you’re entertaining outdoors.

Quirky containers

Because you give them so little water you can use almost any container for succulents you’re displaying indoors. Bright cans look great but you can also use teacups, bowls, crates, beach buckets, old kitchen pots, ladles – the choice is endless. Make sure you don’t overwater.

Say it with succulents

Wedding “flowers” with a difference. The bouquet, buttonhole, favours and table centrepiece are among a huge variety of ideas on Pinterest for using succulents for weddings. The table décor can even be given to guests to plant as a long-lasting memento of your big day.
